The Wiyot and Yurok tribes were the native inhabitants of our region prior to European settlement. The modern boundaries of McKinleyville were made from many smaller settlements in the region. The first permanent settlement came when Joe Dow arrived in the 1860s and established the area known as Dow's Prairie. The main part of McKinleyville town was made from the former community of Minor, which changed its name to McKinleyville after President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901. Another community absorbed under the umbrella of our city was nearby Calville, which was settled by the employees of the California Barrel Company. Timber was the major resource that brought initial growth to the town, but it is its location close to the county seat and Humboldt State University that has kept McKinleyville developing ever since.
