The Wiyot and Yurok tribes were the native
inhabitants of our region prior to European settlement. The modern boundaries of McKinleyville were made from many smaller settlements in the region.
The first permanent settlement came when Joe Dow arrived in the 1860s and established the area known as Dow's Prairie. The main part of McKinleyville town was made from the former community of Minor, which changed its name to McKinleyville after President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.

Another community absorbed under the umbrella of our city was nearby Calville, which was settled by the employees of the California Barrel Company. Timber was the major
resource that brought initial growth to the town, but it is its location close to the county seat and Humboldt State University that has kept McKinleyville developing ever since.
McKinleyville California has mild, rainy winters and cool, dry summers, with an average temperature of 55° degrees.

Seven public schools offer education to area students. Higher education is provided most closely by Humboldt State University in Arcata and the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, both within an easy 10 miles of McKinleyville.
Mad River Community Hospital serves local health care needs from just 5 miles outside of town. Sempervirens and St. Joseph Hospital are alternatives about 10 miles away.
Annual events in town include the Azalea Festival every first weekend in June,
which features food, a parade, sports, games and more activities. A sand castle
competition on popular Clam Beach draws in artists each summer as well.
The beautiful Azalea State Reserve is a 30-acre park that is profuse with pink
and white western azalea blossoms every spring. A picnic area as well as a
self-guided nature tour are available.
Six Rivers Brewery is a McKinleyville institution known for its award-winning
beers and live music performances. The small venue has proven a popular stop for
many big name performers traveling between San Francisco and Portland.
Golf aficionados can enjoy the Beau Pre Golf Club, a public course with 18 holes
that will challenge any skill level. If you need another option, nearby Eureka
has its own Eureka Golf Course with another 18 holes for you to explore.
