Seven public schools offer education to area students. Higher education is provided most closely by Humboldt State University in Arcata and the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, both within an easy 10 miles of McKinleyville.

Mad River Community Hospital serves local health care needs from just 5 miles outside of town. Sempervirens and St. Joseph Hospital are alternatives about 10 miles away.

Annual events in town include the Azalea Festival every first weekend in June, which features food, a parade, sports, games and more activities. A sand castle competition on popular Clam Beach draws in artists each summer as well.
